The Forest Gump milepost

For those of you that have seen the movie "Forest Gump", there is a part of the movie in which Forest decides to start running after an incident in his life. After a while he has a large number of people who are running with him thinking he is on some noble quest or something.

One day he stops turns around, says that he is tired and starts walking past the other runners and down the highway.

This is milepost 13 on US Highway 163 just north of the Arizona/Utah border where that scene in the movie was filmed. My wife and I took a vacation in May, 2008 down to Durango, Colorado for our anniversary and stopped here on the way back.

In the background you can see Monument Valley which is not only famous for its many natural formations, but has been the site of numerous television and movie productions over the years.

Whether your a movie buff, photographer, or just like seeing interesting places in our beautiful country, you need to make a visit.

Old Building on US Highway 160

Yesterday when I blogged about the old gas station building I mentioned that there was also a stone building that was round sitting just west of the gas station.

Here is a picture of that stone building. Once again I would like to find out what purpose this building served. You can see there appears to be a guard stand or something in front of the main building.

Anybody know what this was?

Down the U.S. Highways...

I just love traveling the US Highways. You see so many different things and meet so many different people which not possible when you drive down the Interstate.

Previously I mentioned my wife and I headed to Durango, Colorado for our anniversary in May. On the way back we headed down US Highway 160 past Four Corners and to Kayenta, Arizona before heading on US 163 back to Utah.

Out in the middle of nowhere we encountered this old abandoned gas station that set just below a beautiful red rock butte. A few hundred yards to the west their was also a round stone building. Both of them look so odd sitting out here in the middle of nowhere.

Does anyone now what the round stone building was used for?
