Abandoned Rails

Streetcar tracks that once were used by Seattle's Waterfront Streetcar before a sculpture garden replaced its car house and the line was shut down.

Boat on Camano Island

While I was taken the previous picture I saw this boat just sitting upside down along the beach. There is a few homes near this point so it might belong to them.

Camano Island looking toward Whidbey Island

What a view.

After visiting my friend in Stanwood we took a drive around Camano Island. Sometimes you just have to take roads that leave off the main road because you never know what your might find.

In this case we found a development of pretty boring homes but also came upon this wonderful view.

Remember you never know what you might find when you take the road less driven...

Boise Winnemucca Stages MCI

I always like the colors of Boise-Winnemucca Stages buses. Their newer buses are even better looking that some of their older ones.

One irony is the name of the bus company that started out by providing bus service from Boise to yes Winnemucca where it connected to Greyhound.

The company stopped running that route about a decade ago but the name lives on.

Icelandair 757

Icelandair 757 by Dornoff Photography
Icelandair 757, a photo by Dornoff Photography on Flickr.

If you go through my blog you will quickly notice that I love taking pictures of almost anything that is transportation related.

After my trip to Portland and Seattle back last October we flew from Seattle to Salt Lake City on Delta. We had to turn in the rental car by noon and it was raining hard so we decided to just get to airport early and have lunch there.

Of course that left me plenty of time to take pictures of planes at SEATAC.

This is Icelandair 757 being taxied to its gate from the Delta hanger.

Tow Mater

You never know what you might encounter driving down the road...

After spending some time in Portland at a conference I took Washington State's Cascade train service up to Seattle and met my wife who flew directly up to Seattle.

While driving the next day to have breakfast with my best friend, his wife and daughter a truck pulled off the same off ramp we did.

When we started to pass the truck we realized that he was towing a replica of Tow Mater from the Cars movies. Fortunately he pulled into the same shopping center we did so we were able to get some pictures.

Royal Motor Inn Everett Washington

Sorry its been so long since I posted something but a lot has been happening in the last few months and hopefully I can discuss it further by the middle of the next month.

Meanwhile, lets get back to talking pictures.

The previous pictures I posted was of my trip to Portland, Oregon. After leaving Portland I took the state of Washington's Talgo train service from Portland to Seattle where my wife met me after flying in from Salt Lake City.

On Saturday after spending time with friends we drove around the Everett area. Broadway through Everett used to be US Highway 99 that was replaced by Interstate 5 so there is many older buildings dating from the days of the old highway.

This is the Royal Motor Inn which sits in the northern part of Everett near Everett Community College. After taking the picture I realized that there was a guy smoking on the first level which I think added some character to the shot.

A photo turns special

In my last entry I mentioned the day my wife and I had in Seattle while visiting a friend between taking different Amtrak trains. After visiting the Pike Place Market my wife and I headed toward Seattle's bus tunnel in order to catch a bus down to the International District in order to find some Chinese Food (we were not impressed with the Chinese Restaurant at Pike Place on a previous visit).

My wife decided to run into a Rite Aid for a couple of things so I decided to get the camera out and take a couple of pictures hoping I the Seattle Police department wouldn't arrest me (there was an incident with a photographer in Seattle shortly before the trip).

I took this picture of a Metro Articulated Hybrid which were still fairly new at the time in front of a Ross Dress for less store which I used as a background because of the design.

Later when looking more carefully the building look as though it could have been a former Woolworth store which was confirmed my someone on Flickr.

My father worked for Woolworth's for many years and would supervise their construction projects across the west. It then hit me that this was the very store that my father was working on when I was born which is another funny story in itself.

I was way over due in the days before they induced labor. My mother had to return to California so at the last minute she hopped a Greyhound bus for Los Angeles (yes Greyhound used to be respectable and safe to ride).

I was born about a week after my mother arrived back in Southern California and for some strange reason the buses arrived early at every driver change point.

You never know when a random picture might turn into something special...

Pike Place Fish Company

Here is another picture from the vacation my wife and I took back in November of 2007.

We flew down from Salt Lake City to Long Beach on Jet Blue, spent a couple of days with family, then took Amtrak's Coast Starlight up to Portland then the next day we continued onto Seattle via Washington State's Cascade service Talgo.

The day after we arrived in Seattle, we took Sound Transit buses to downtown and spent the day in the area until our next train depart at 4:45pm to Seattle.

We took a long walk around the downtown area before ending up at one of my favorite places Pike Place Market. We look around before I stood in front of the Pike Place Fish Company for a few minutes taking pictures.

The Pike Place Fish Company is famous because of the way they throw around the fish when someone buys one. Well I waited several minutes but was not able to get a picture of them throwing the fish. My wife was getting hungry so we left and headed back towards King Street Station and the International District in order to have lunch.

Here is the best of the fish company pictures. You can see several people looking at the fish but none of them bought any while I was there.

Utah Strobist Event December 2, 2008

On December 2nd I attended a event sponsored by the Utah Strobist Flickr group.

The event was held on the top levels of the Walker Garage which is in downtown Salt Lake City. The weather was cold but there was only a couple of sprinkles so the weather held out for us.

There was several models present for us to take pictures of. This picture is of Steven one of the 5 models that I photographed that night.

Since in the past I have not taken many pictures of people and rarely used a flash, this was the first picture I ever attempted to removed red eye on and the results came out better than I expected.

This week I plan to attend a Photowalking Utah event at the downtown library and Temple Square. I would also like to attend the Utah Photo Safari trip up to the University of Utah on Wednesday but have corporate big wigs flying in at my "real" job.

I have a lot of things coming up. In late January or early February I will do a dedicated stock photo shoot with "S" my co-worker. Then in late February we have a tripped planned to Moab and a week long trip in June to visit my friend in Seattle plus attend Lumber Days in Libby, Montana.

Frater Lake in NE Washington State

One day I had some business up in Colville, Washington and decided to take a side trip on the way home. I came upon this lake on Washington Highway 20 about halfway between Colville and the end of the highway near Tiger, Washington.

The lake was so peaceful and serene with a nice reflection. I originally took this picture with my first SLR camera that I ever owned which was a Nikon EM that lasted me 18 years. I then scanned it in with a HP scanner that only worked when it felt like it.

I love traveling the 2 lane highways of America because you just never know what you are going to find or who you will meet.

Atrium of the Downtown Salt Lake Library

I attend a Toastmasters meeting every Wednesday night at the downtown Library which gives me time to take a snapshot or two of this unique library.

While the Spokane, Washington library may have a better view since it overlooks the Spokane River and Spokane Falls, the Spokane library is nothing but a basic box compared to the unique architecture of Salt Lake City main library.

This photo was taken from the 4th level which is the highest level to have cross over bridges that allow you to take photos like this.

Another unique feature of the library is one its regular guests who happens to be the real rain man. The gentleman that Dustin Hoffman's character from the movie is based on can often be seen reading books in one of the library's many sections.
